Music and Art in the Gallery

Join us in the Art Saint Louis Gallery on Monday, January 14, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. as violinist Lorraine Glass-Harris and bassoonist Hank Skolnick perform George Frideric Handel's D Major Sonata for Violin with Bassoon Continuo, with the new exhibition Misperception on view as the backdrop to this unique, one-hour moderated performance.

Hande's 4-movement sonata for violin and bassoon is a work with clear and contrasting emotional affects. Each movement is approximately 2-3 minutes long. The musicians will repeat each movement several times with differing instructions to the audience and guest moderator, visual artist Erin McGrath Rieke, will lead the audience through the musical work and talk about the combination of music and art.

The public is warmly invited to this free event and audience members are encouraged to bring sketchbooks, watercolors and paper, cameras (NO FLASH), or any other small art making materials to create artworks while the musicians perform.

Pictures at an Exhibition

We’re pleased to announce a first-of-its-kind collaboration between Art Saint Louis and the St. Louis Symphony. Pictures at an Exhibition is a two-part program in which artists and the community at large will be given opportunity to explore and enjoy connections between visual art and music. The program centers on the St. Louis Symphony’s January 2013 performances of Modest Mussorgsky’s programmatic suite Pictures at an Exhibition. As Mussorgsky’s famous composition was inspired by an exhibition of contemporary visual art, Art Saint Louis will invite artists and others to discover this same creative connection in reverse order. “We have an opportunity here to make connections between music-making and art, both of which are so very essential to St. Louis,” comments ASL Artistic Director, Robin Hirsch, “Partnership with the St. Louis Symphony, in particular, is quite an exciting development for ASL.”
 

Observe, Absorb & Respond

Art Saint Louis invites our region’s visual artists to Powell Hall to attend a special, private rehearsal of the St. Louis Symphony on Thursday, November 29, to observe the Symphony in rehearsal. Musical aesthetics, acoustics of the hall and interpersonal dynamics of the musicians will all provide the basis for a subsequent call for entries for new 2-D artworks in all styles. Works will be juried by Art Saint Louis’ Artistic Director, Robin Hirsch, and the resultant symphony-inspired exhibit will be proudly displayed at Powell Hall during the Symphony’s Pictures at an Exhibition concert series, January 25-27, 2013. Artists whose works are selected for exhibition will be acknowledged in program materials produced by the St. Louis Symphony and will be invited to participate in a “Meet the Artist” program to take place at Powel Hall in connection with the Saturday, January 26 concert.

Where Sight and Sound Meet

In advance of the concert series and exhibition at Powell Hall, members of the St. Louis Symphony will give a presentation-based performance of chamber music in the rare atmosphere of the Art Saint Louis galleries on January 14, 2013. The performance will be free and open to the public, and will focus on shared aural and visual cues such as contour, color, texture and emotion.
