Luanne Rimel

What is your preferred medium, and what factors most influenced you in that direction?

I love cloth and have worked with it for over 30 years with dyes, paints, imagery and stitches and even made my own clothes when I was young. I am drawn to cloth because of it properties of memory and its ability to hide, reveal and be manipulated and also its rich cultural history as money, ritual objects and signifiers of wealth or poverty. The intersection of domestic ritual and technology intrigues me as well as cloth’s perceived identity with “women’s work”. In my current body of work I print my photographs onto cotton flour-sack dishtowels with a wide format inkjet printer, then piece, layer and hand stitch across the entire surface, marking time and referencing memory.

Why does the work of Art Saint Louis matter?

Art Saint Louis is an important venue for artists but also for the community so they can experience the creations of the young emerging artist or the established local artist. It also supports the business side of local artists through their workshops and seminars, helping us grow in our chosen profession. There IS no other organization like it in the area. The heart of Art Saint Louis lies in the local community and that is what matters.
