A Beautiful Look at Arts and Disability

If a picture is worth a thousand words, this is certainly worth much more:

I was privileged to be among the first to enjoy this beautiful new video by VSA Missouri at a social gathering last week. Hats off to VSA for their great work, including their vision in producing this video. May it travel far and wide.

An Opportunity for Fresh Impact

If you’ve ever stood in front of a piece of art and been inspired or challenged in any way, then you know what drives the work of Art Saint Louis. It’s our joy to partner with the artists of our region as they illumine the human experience and gift our community with something of transcendent meaning. For me and for many others involved, this continues to be such a meaningful and rewarding endeavor, despite the financial challenges we’ve faced this year.

Something to be thankful for...

“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art. . . . It has no survival value;
rather it is one of those things that gives value to survival.” — C. S. Lewis

I'm not sure how this statement first came to my attention, but it has certainly stuck with me. As someone who has spent his professional life advocating for art of one sort or another, I'll admit it's easy to make the mistake of pitting the value of art against the ever-pressing, survival-oriented concerns that otherwise define human existence. That it's an unequal pairing is obvious enough. If you were stranded on a desert island, would you rather be gifted with an endless supply of food and water or [insert your favorite work of art here]? But Lewis' statement provides valuable perspective on the role of art in giving meaning to existence.
