VLAA workshop @ ASL

 

This informative workshop is co-presented by Art Saint Louis and St. Louis Volunteer Laywers & Accountants for the Arts (VLAA) and is designed to help working artists stay organized when entering juried shows or contacting galleries. Learn how to keep your records straight for shows and how to keep track of the money spent and income earned on your art-making process, so you’re prepared to pay taxes. You’ll also learn about inventory software packages for artists and Studio Protector, the artists’ guide to preparing for emergencies.

Photographing 3-D Art with a Digital Camera


Join Art St. Louis as we present “How to Photograph 3-D Art with Digital Point & Shoot Cameras and DSLR Cameras" with commercial photographer & fine artist Garry McMichael.

During this five-hour workshop, Garry will show artists how to photograph jewelry, pottery, sculpture, wood and textiles for use on websites, in e-mails, to enter juried exhibitions, and to make Giclée prints. Emphasis will be on simple techniques with a minimum amount of equipment, lighting and accessories required. Plenty of time will be available for each student to photograph their specific artwork.
 
Some of the subjects that will be covered include:

  • An overview of point and shoot cameras, their settings & the best settings for 3-d art.
  • How to set/change your color balance, iso, and digital resolution.
  • How to adjust the exposure & color balance.
  • How to control your depth of field.
  • Different equipment, lighting and accessories necessary to photograph 3-d art.
  • How to zoom-in/crop, straighten and square-up your image.
  • Basic lighting techniques to photograph your artwork indoors with a variety of supplementary lighting equipment.  Emphasis will be on using daylight balanced compact fluorescent lights.
  • Photography tips, tricks and secrets to make photographing 3-d Art easier.
  • Basic discussion of digital file formats and how to prepare your files for use on the internet and submission to exhibits and art fairs.


What you will need for the Seminar:

  • Your camera (digital only); We will not discuss film photography.
  • Your camera’s instruction book (very important).
  • A tripod if you have one (you don’t need to buy one for this seminar).
  • Your 3D art to photograph.  Bring no more than two pieces.  Depending on the class size, we will be limited in the number of photographs we can make.

PHOTOGRAPHY FOR ARTISTS SEMINAR

This past Fall and Winter, Art Saint Louis recently presented a Photography for Artists Seminar with commercial photographer & fine artist Garry McMichael in his Lafayette Square-based studio in St. Louis, MO.

During these four-hour workshops, Garry taught artists how to take better photographs of their artwork for use on the internet, to enter juried exhibitions, and to make Giclée prints and 35mm slides. Emphasis was on simple techniques with a minimum amount of accessories required.

Some of the subjects covered included:

  • An overview of your camera & its settings;

  • how to set/change your color balance, iso, and digital resolution;

  • equipment and set-up to photograph 2-d artwork;

  • how to zoom-in/crop, straighten and square-up your image;

  • how to correct the exposure & color balance;

  • photograph your artwork outdoors using daylight as the light source;

  • simple techniques to photograph your artwork indoors with supplementary lighting;

  • basic discussion of digital file formats and how to prepare your files for submission to exhibits and art fairs;

Reproducing Artwork in the Digital Age: A Workshop for Artists

This Summer, Art Saint Louis presented Reproducing Artwork in the Digital Age, a professional artists' workshop. Held in the ASL Gallery, artist & art educator Russ Rosener led the workshop. Participants were given instruction on how to: light & photograph artwork with a digital camera; import photos from a digicam; basics on Photoshop, Paint and Preview software; resize & rename images & save to CD for use in entering juried shows; upload images to online photo sites such as Flickr, Photo Bucket & Picasa; create a PDF document & slide show from images; and more.
